Follow in the footsteps of the fishermen who still have the craft of pulling nets on the My Khe beach

For a long time, fishermen in the coastal areas of Quang Ngai province have made a living by pulling nets to catch fish. Although not well off, this profession brings a stable income, so fishermen still maintain it today.

We came to witness fishing trawling at My Khe beach in Ky Xuyen village, Tinh Ky commune, Quang Ngai city on a peaceful morning. Nearly 20 fishermen from the early morning began to go to the sea to pull their nets.

To catch fish, a fisherman has to row a basket boat from the shore to the sea to drop the net, 1 – 1.5 km from the shore in an arc.

At that time, one end of the net is kept on the shore, the head and the rest of the net are carried by fishermen using basket boats to drop and form a semicircle.

It takes about 2 hours for each fisherman to release and pull the net ashore. Depending on the place where the net is released, the length of the net is also different, from 1,000 to 3,000 m, with a very small mesh that is only slightly larger than the head of a chopstick.

When the net is pulled ashore, along with shrimp, fish, crab… the fishermen gather to remove it from the net. That morning, the number of seafood fishermen caught in their nets was more than 10 kg.

Normally, after the traditional Tet holiday, fishermen will start pulling the first nets until the end of the 9th lunar month. This fishing depends on the weather, so the time is not fixed, when the sea is calm, the fishermen will pull the net and they will rest and wait for the sea to calm down if it is fierce

Trawling also brings a stable income for fishermen here. Every day, fishermen get from 300,000 to 500,000 VND/person. The fishing profession is still maintained by fishermen in communes: Tinh Khe, Tinh Ky (Quang Ngai city), Duc Minh (Mo Duc district) and Binh Chau (Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province) still maintained until today.
